The automotive industry doesn’t forgive mistakes. Rapid growth often increases the likelihood of quality issues — especially in emerging technologies like electric vehicles (EVs) and PHEVs (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles), where systems are still evolving. Chinese automaker BYD, one of the fastest-growing players in the market, is now facing this very challenge.
According to a Reuters report, BYD — often dubbed China’s rising star — is conducting the largest vehicle recall in its history, affecting cars sold in China. The recall involves Tang and Yuan Pro models produced between 2015 and 2022, due to battery design-related safety risks.
Reports submitted to Chinese regulators note that Tang vehicles manufactured between March 2015 and July 2017suffered from component issues linked to these safety problems. Similarly, Yuan Pro EVs produced between February 2021 and August 2022 were found to have battery defects originating from manufacturing flaws.
The report also recalls that in January 2025, BYD issued a recall for its Fangchengbao Bao 5 plug-in hybrid off-road SUVs due to fire risks. Likewise, in September 2024, around 97,000 Dolphin and Yuan Plus EVs were recalled for the same reason.
In the age of electric mobility, quality control leaves no room for error. BYD’s current struggles highlight how rapid expansion can expose even industry leaders to major risks.
