Tesla’s Door Handle Issue Spreads to Europe

After China, Tesla is now facing issues with its door handles in Europe. According to Bloomberg on October 16, 2025, the Dutch RDW authority will tighten regulations to ensure that doors operate from both inside and outside during power outages, coordinating with Euro NCAP and UNECE. This move follows several reports and a fatal accident. In the U.S., NHTSA is investigating Model Y door handles. China has proposed mandatory mechanical opening systems, while the EU Safety Council calls for swift action and recalls.

📌 Lesson: Innovation is great, but if you replace a proven, fundamental design with a new electric system, problems may arise. Doors that don’t function during a power outage in electric vehicles recently cost a life in China. It seems all brands copying Tesla’s door handles will also face similar scrutiny. In the automotive industry, safety comes first.
