Solid-state battery technology, considered a major leap forward in electric vehicle innovation, is now under the spotlight of major automakers. BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis have started testing this next-generation battery system.
BMW is collaborating with Solid Power to develop solid-state batteries and is currently testing the technology in a modified i7 prototype. The tests are being conducted in Munich, Germany. Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz has begun road-testing solid-state batteries developed in partnership with Factorial Energy, integrated into an EQS prototype.
Stellantis is also working with Factorial Energy and plans to deploy a demo fleet by 2026. The first trials may take place in Dodge Charger EV models.
Solid-state battery technology aims to bring the following benefits to electric vehicles:
Driving range exceeding 1,000 kilometers
Faster charging times
Lighter and safer battery structures
If this technology evolves as expected, it could mark the beginning of a major transformation in the world of electric vehicles.
